Family-Themed Writing Contest
Prize:
PRIZES: $200 for best poem on theme; $200 for best fiction on theme; $200 for best creative nonfiction on theme. Plus publication in Issue 8 (January 2025)
Family plays a huge role in our lives.
Family comes in so many forms––from the family we actually have to the family relationships we might long for; from biological to adopted family. Family can be routine, and family can be mysterious (perhaps a big mystery from the past). Family can fill a holiday table with faces, or it can consist of a pair of people.
Send us your poems, short stories, and creative nonfiction on this theme by Tuesday, December 10, 2024, 12:01 PM EST.
PRIZES: $200 for best poem on theme; $200 for best fiction on theme; $200 for best creative nonfiction on theme. Prize-winning pieces will be published in Issue 8 (January 2025). All submissions also considered for publication in Issue 8.
No Entry Fee for Contest. Judges are members of the UTM editorial team.
Submit up to 3 poems on the theme. Submit one short story (word count between 55 words for Nano Fiction up to 5,500 words). Submit one creative nonfiction essay (word count between 55 words for Nano CNF up to 5,000 words). You can send work in all three genres, but use separate submission forms for each genre for the contest! Submit here: https://forms.gle/eXgXmBPPrnDCMaaU8
Here are some prompts (just suggestions) which might spark your writing!

* Mysteries in your family: what's unknown to this day? Or, what family mystery has been solved, when, and by whom?
* Do you have longing for family? What's the nature of your longing?
* Changes in your family life
* Your dream family
* Big families
* Little families
* Parents and/or siblings
* Pets or non-human family members
* Habits, rituals, customs in your family
* Treasured objects or special rooms in your family life
* Food in your family
* Imagine your family in the future (so future generations)
* Imagine your family in the past (so previous generations)
