Losing a Sister

Marion Moore
Two sisters curl up next to each other.
They aren’t biological, or human,
but they still love each other.
They were our two cats, but father was mad.
He was convinced they would tear
Everything apart. Destroy the furniture.
“I want them declawed!”
My mother, being a vet, refused to do it.
She found alternatives, but it didn’t last.
Mom ended up sobbing through a surgery
In which she removed the nails on their front paws.
They limped around for three weeks, but made it through.
Dad was happy, but Mom was sad and guilty.
Some years later, they were completely recovered.
It was new years eve.
We were in Tiki Island
and we had some friends over for dinner.
We ate and hung out, working on a puzzle.
One of the sisters, Keece,
Curls up in the lid of the puzzle,
Watching us work and getting pets.
The friends leave after midnight.
We let them out the door, opening it for them.
Mom stays up late watching the fireworks outside on the porch.
We’re all tired and we go to sleep.
The next morning, something scary happens:
Keece didn’t come eat her dinner.
She was a fat, clumsy cat who loved food.
She would never miss breakfast.
Thus began the search.
Marion Moore is a 16 year old high school student living in Houston, Texas. Being from Houston feels like a luxury at times. The Tex-Mex food is amazing and the health care is amazing, but expensive. It's a diverse city only two hours away from the gulf. Cuisine is everywhere and very good regardless of the type. This is Marion's first year writing poetry, but she has been into poetry since she was 14.
