The storm

Eniola Ajao
The table’s got a scar from that time
Dad threw the salt shaker, hard,
and it ricocheted, leaving a welt.
Now we sit around it quiet,
eating soup in the grooves of Chicago.
Mom chews slow, her eyes on the window,
like there’s something out there to see—
a flash of something better maybe,
or just the streetlight flickering on and off.
My brother’s knee bounces under the table.
Outside, dogs bark at nothing.
Inside, we do the same.
