Thirteen Ways of Looking at Ginger

Rohun Reddy
1. Alongside sugar crystals
And within chewy bites,
Ginger loses its taste profile’s unfriendly edges.
2. Mixed with syrup and injected with gas,
The bubbles pop as they hit your tongue,
Now stinging you in more ways than one.
3. It spread across the world to form countless subspecies.
Ginger’s flavor is dependent
On the environment it dwells in.
4. Tortured on the grater,
And boiled in a pot,
Ginger never approved its use,
But serves nonetheless.
5. Ginger is a side-effect-free antibiotic
That will never grow useless over time.
6. Spice hits the back of your throat,
As you inhale. It’s so strong, that you can almost taste it
Without ever making contact with your tongue.
7. Its taste would be temporarily debilitating
For any wild animal fooled by its harmless appearance,
But it would be better off stripped of its defense mechanism,
As we love and farm it for its supposedly horrible taste.
8. Ginger is from the ground,
And is deeply layered with grime from it.
No matter how many times you wash it,
It will always look dirty.
9. The only way to separate ginger is to use a knife.
Snapping it will leave it connected with its fibers
That are strong enough to hold it together,
But not powerful enough to withstand the heat it is subjected to.
10. In its raw form, it’s blood
Leaves a centralized yellow stain,
But it’s blood drains when it cooks,
And loses its artistic characteristic.
11. Plucked and packaged,
Ginger is a convenience
From a transnational origin.
12. Evolving as it’s selectively bred,
Ginger is the farmer’s multi-generational child.
13. Most are located,
But some are left, under the soil
To erupt in a cyclical memorial of their passing.
